Workshop summary:

Stories can sometimes be seen as frivolous, superficial, or a luxury in an already crowded lesson, short on time. The power of a well-told story for world building and knowledge acquisition should not be underestimated. When a story is told well, a pupil is in a heightened state of attention, anticipating what might happen, and fixed on the teacher’s next utterance. Why do well-crafted stories matter so much in history teaching? Through several periods of world history from the National Curriculum, we will consider:

Why stories are crucial to a history lesson’s journey and pupil understanding
What factors make a story powerful
How to build storytelling into our curriculum planning

For those natural storytellers in the history classroom, come and feel justified. For those who find storytelling does not come easily, come and learn how to become a more effective storyteller.
