PE

Dear Subject Leader / Teacher / Teaching Assistant,

Welcome to the HEP Primary PE home page. On this page, you will find a range of resources and information to support you if you are: the subject leader for PE at your school and/or a classroom teacher/teaching assistant looking for advice and guidance to support your lesson planning.

The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

All pupils ought to be physically active every day, be it through PE lessons, daily activities or extra- curricular activities. PE supports them to develop healthy lifestyles. All pupils should have the opportunity to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as teamwork, fairness and respect.

afPE Quality Mark for Physical Education, School Sport & Physical Activity

What is the afPE Quality Mark?

The afPE Quality Mark is a prestigious award that will evidence the strength and quality of Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) in your school. It will raise the profile of the subject and the school, both locally and nationally, and will promote the outstanding work that is being undertaken on a daily basis.

The afPE Quality Mark is a unique self-review and evaluation process that involves the completion of an application form as well as a school visit by one of afPE’s Validation Team of highly qualified school improvement professionals.

Your validator will support you through the process (via telephone and email support) and will conduct a school visit as part of the award. There are three application windows every year and schools should allow themselves up to three months to carry out the application.

The benefits of the afPE Quality Mark:

  • Ensures rigour and sustainability in the planning, monitoring and continuous development of high quality PESSPA
  • Recognises and celebrates outstanding practice and innovation in PESSPA so that the school ‘stands out from the crowd’
  • Provides evidence of whole school improvement
  • Raises the profile and promotes a positive message of PESSPA at local, regional and national levels
  • Provides a platform for sharing excellence and success
  • Outlines where your school is now, and where you are going

Coronavirus (Covid19): a list of on-line education resources for home education (7th April 2020) HMG

Physical education (PE) and physical activity

This initial list of physical education (PE) and physical activity resources is based on recommendations from:

  • the Association for Physical Education (afPE)
  • Public Health England (PHE)
  • Sport England
  • the Yorkshire Sport Foundation (YSF)

These resources will help young people to get the daily 60 minutes of activity recommended by the UK Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in fun ways.

All the resources listed here are for activities designed to be carried out indoors or, if available, a garden.

Children and young people can go outside for one form of exercise a day, such as:

  • a walk with members of their household
  • a run with members of their household
  • a cycle with members of their household

Outdoor exercise should be carried out locally.

Children and young people should always follow the latest which means making sure that they and their parent or carer stay more than 2 metres from others (including friends and other family members).
