A Reading-for-Pleasure Project for HEP Primary Schools
This twilight workshop is for teachers who have completed the Contingent Talk training.
This is the final network session for Nursery/Early Years practitioners led by Charlotte Raby.
Main agenda for this session
- Reflection – practitioners will report on the progress of the children they have worked with this year
- Films – it is expected that all practitioners have a film of their Contingent Talk practice to talk about and upload to Padlet
- Exit Survey – to be completed during the session
What is Contingent Talk?
- 10 minutes – once a week ‘Contingent talk with a book’ sessions with a trained adult.
- A simple child- centred approach to language learning through talk contingent on the child’s interest based around a book chosen by the child.
- At least a term’s commitment to providing ‘Contingent talk with a book’ to each child chosen for the programme.
- It will also be an opportunity to identify colleagues who will be involved in the training sessions.
Impact:
- Shared reading has a positive impact in children’s language development.
- Dialogic reading styles are more effective at boosting children’s language development than a simple, storytelling narrative style.
- Interventions based on dialogic reading styles have a positive impact on children’s expressive vocabulary.
