A Reading-for-Pleasure Project for HEP Primary Schools
Please sign up for an Introduction to Contingent Talk with Books
This session will take place online with Christine Lovett & Kathryn Sikora, our Contingent talk expert ambassadors. In this introduction to Contingent talk, Nursery and Early Years Leaders will learn about the importance of child-led book talk. They will identify teachers and/or practitioners, in their EYs team, who will participate in the training from Autumn 2024.
You will also discuss the best approach to delivering the training in 2024/25 – online/in-person.
Here are a few more details.
What is it?
- 10 minutes – once a week ‘Contingent talk with a book’ sessions with a trained adult.
- A simple child- centred approach to language learning through talk contingent on the child’s interest based around a book chosen by the child.
- At least a term’s commitment to providing ‘Contingent talk with a book’ to each child chosen for the programme.
- It will also be an opportunity to identify colleagues who will be involved in the training sessions.
Impact:
- Shared reading has a positive impact in children’s language development.
- Dialogic reading styles are more effective at boosting children’s language development than a simple, storytelling narrative style.
- Interventions based on dialogic reading styles have a positive impact on children’s expressive vocabulary.
